Managing Butternut

Strategies for planting

The successful planting of butternut requires careful consideration of many factors. Firstly, make sure that butternut is suited to the site, and that adapted seed sources are available. To ensure this:

  • Know your planting site – its soils, drainage, and climate
  • Understand butternut's needs
  • Choose the right seed source – matched to your local climate

Ontario's Natural Selections is a program sponsored by the FGCA with the purpose of ensuring that locally adapted seed sources are available for consumers to choose.

This program helps to address the FGCA's broader mandate of the protection of genetic diversity in Ontario forests. By respecting that Ontario's native woody plants have evolved to be specially adapted to local climates and sites (a process of natural selection), reforestation efforts can be a success for generations to come.

As you begin your search for planting stock, be sure to ask the growers about seed source. Growers participating under the Ontario’s Natural Selections program will have certified stock, meaning the source of seed will have been tracked from forest to collector to grower. This stock will be labeled by seed source to allow you to choose the most appropriate seed for your planting project.

If you are interested in replanting your woodlot or farmland and you wish to involve butternut in your selections, contact us for a list of nurseries who are growing butternut. If you are interested in having your lot planted and you wish to obtain the names of reputable tree-planting contractors in your area, you can visit the Conservation Ontario Web site to discuss your planting project with them.
