Conservation of Butternut
Butternut canker is a widespread and virulent, introduced fungal disease, and is a major threat to butternut across its range. The future of butternut depends on the ability of all jurisdictions to help landowners conserve mature butternut and promote butternut regeneration. Although the canker does kill most trees, some seem able to withstand the infection and survive—perhaps through some form of genetic resistance or other disease-limiting mechanism. These trees are the hope for butternut's future.
The FGCA, along with its partners, have been developing strategies for the conservation of butternut. In 2005, the Butternut Recovery Team was started, bringing together many of the important players in butternut canker research. We are always looking for the suport of private woodlot owners and industry professionals, and the links below will provide you with information on conservation practices and ways that you can become involved.
