Butternut Canker Range and ExtentButternut is native to, and widespread in eastern Canada. It grows in southern Ontario and Quebec, as well as in New Brunswick. To date, butternut canker has been identified throughout the range of butternut in Canada. The FGCA started a survey of private woodlot owners in 1995. Approximately 500 landowners responded with reports of the locations of butternut on their property. Responses from 304 participants provided geographic reference data as shown in the map below. Of the 500 reports, 263 included data on the health of trees, and in 47% of the sites for which health was reported, the trees were in poor condition. It can be summarized that, with the exception of isolated populations, butternut canker is ubiquitous. We are still interested in hearing from other landowners; if you have butternut in your woodlot, please download the butternut survey form.
