About the FGCA

Our mandate and goals

The mandate of the FGCA, put simply, is to:

Promote the importance of the genetic resources of the forests in southcentral Ontario, with emphasis on conservation of genetic diversity of native forest tree species.

Our goals are threefold:

  1. To promote the maintenance and restoration of the genetic base of woody plant species (trees and shrubs).
  2. To increase the economic benefits of planting through planning and implementing tree breeding programs for selected woody plant species.
  3. To ensure the use of biologically appropriate seed sources in support of planting programs.
